PROMENADES
AROUND THE PUY MARY in the CANTAL
Departure from BORT LES ORGUES, direction Aurillac, after
some kilometers turn to the left
in direction of :
SAIGNES
:
Pleasante summer stay in the
country Pays de Bort-Artense. The church Eglise Sainte
Croix of XIIth century and some houses of XVth
century give a picturesque decoration to the small place.

| To
be visited also : the Roman chapel Notre Dame du Château
edified on a basaltique dyke. In proximity, see the basaltic
promontory of Chastel-Marlhac, rare specimen of
inversed relief, vis-à-vis to the organs of Bort, with
its church Saint Victor of XIIth century. It is
also unavoidable to go a roundabout way through Ydes-Bourg
and its Eglise Saint Georges, exceptional Auvergnat-Roman
art specimen constructed by the Templars. |

SAUVAT
: This
little medieval borough with its Eglise Saint Martin of
XIIth century is worth
a stop.
Continue in direction of Mauriac
AUZERS
: This castle of XIVth and XVIth century is
a beautiful specimen of military architecture at that
epoch. It comprises three round towers and a main building
seamed by a round-way. Guided visit every day from
June 15 until September 15 - Fix a date out of the touristic
season.
MAURIAC : This is
the capital of West-Cantal renown for its cattle market
(cows from Salers with red coat).
The Basilique Notre Dame des Miracles is the greatest
edifice of the Cantal. The wooden Vierge Noire placed
above the high altar has given its name to the church.
In proximity : the ancient Jesuit college which is now
the Lycée Marmontel, and the ancient hôtel d'Orcet
of XVIth century, todate the sub-prefecture, are some
steps worth,
and the museum installed into the ancient prison
and the relicts of the cloister in the place
as well. On the way to Aurillac, the Cascade de Salins
lengthens the route of some kilometers. Return to Mauriac
and turn to the rigth to :
ANGLARDS DE SALERS :
The castle Château de la Trémolière presents a
very pretty collection of wall-hangings d'Aubusson of
the XVIth century.

SALERS
: One
of the most attractive small towns of Haute-Auvergne.
It is situated at 950 m, it keeps intact of its
military past a rare unit
of ramparts and old hotels grouped on a peak. L'Eglise
Saint Mathieu kept its portal
of the XIIth century which preceded the construction
started at the end of the XVth century. The Grande-Place
with the Hôtel de Ville and Maison de
Flojeac is a real theater decoration. |

Continue
through the Col de Néronne and admire at left the
Cirque du Falgoux up to
PUY
MARY :
A hard ascent from the Pas de Peyrol (1 ½ hour
to and back by walking) takes you to the summit at 1787
m (orientation table) where you discover a marvellous
panorama
on the whole vulcanic Auvergne.
Take the direction of Murat, after some kilometers
turn to the left and have a rest to marvel
at the Cascade du Sartre, continue to :
CHEYLADE
:
This borough dominating the petite Rhue is appreciated
by the fishing amateurs. The church is an unique
monument due to the oakwood caissons decorated with angels,
flowers, and animals by which covers the voult of XVIIth
century.
APECHON
:
A typical village of the Cantal department dominated by
the ruines of a citadel
from where you have a beautiful view on the Limousin plateaux,
the Monts Dore, of the Cézallier and the Cantal.
RIOM ES MONTAGNE :
The choir and the transept of
Eglise Saint Georges are originated from the XIth
century. La Maison de la Gentiane (The House of
the Gentian) enables you
to learn everything about this plant. L'Espace Avèze
lets you taste the aperitif produced
at the spot.
Take the route in direction of Bort, but have a stop
at :
SAINT ETIENNE DE CHOMEIL
: charming little borough around its beautiful church
of XII th
century.
Take the road for Bort, but have a stop at :
SALSIGNAC
: Gothic chapel Saint
Ferréol of the XVth century.
ANTIGNAC
: Eglise Saint
Pierre Aux Liens of the XIIth century
LE
ROC VIGNONNET :
Relicts of a chapel with a Roman absis of XIIth century
