after Lanobre at La Pradelle, turn to the rigth,
take direction :
LA TOUR D'AUVERGNE :
The aura of the Seigneurs of LA TOUR have put
a milestone in the French history. Today,
it's a charming little borough in a surrounding
of brooks, cascades, meadows, and forests.
Follow on:
LA BOURBOULE :
Is a hot springs station, mainly equipped for children
, |
| with
two sources, a hot one in Choussy (60°C) and a cold
one in Fenestre (19°C), utilized against respiratory
diseases. On both sides of the Dordogne, aligned
white or soot black facades which are typical for
the thermal city construction of the XIXth century. |
|
LE MONT DORE : At 1050 m altitude, this
touristical centre lives two lifes : in wintertime
it's a valley station at the foot of ski runs ; in summer
it becomes a hot springs station renowned for the treatment
against asthma.
LE PUY DE SANCY :
Covered with flowers in spring, the mountain-range of
Sancy offers marvellous areas for promenades. The cableway
allows you to reach in ten minutes
the proximity of the summit (1885 m) which you gain after
a 20' minutes' walk on a very well arranged way. The view
is immense at the summit (orientation table) and extends
far beyond the Auvergne. |

Redescend
the Mont Doré, and at the town's entry, turn
to your right, direction Col de la Croix Saint
Robert at 1451 m altitude (closed in winter).
LE LAC CHAMBON :
It's a not very deep lake (maximum 12 m) on
60 ha surrounded by a small touristic centre.
MUROL :

of military architecture of the XIIIth and
XVth century which revives every summer thanks
to the medieval spectacles organized
there.
SAINT NECTAIRE :
Possesses a jewel of Roman art : its church
of light stones of XIIth century. It was
edified by the monks
of Chaise Dieu in honour of Saint Nectaire,
partner of Saint Austremoine who evangelized
the Haute-Auvergne.
Return to Murol and take direction |

The
Sancy in winter |
BESSE EN CHANDESSE : conserves
old residences and fortifications giving a
picturesque character ; it's nice to saunter
through the old streets of which rue de
la Boucherie
close to the church Eglise Saint André
is the most spectacular.
SUPER
BESSE : Ski
station created in 1960 at 1350 m altitude
from where you can reach
the summit at 1800 m altitude on the southern
hill-side of Sancy by telecabin. |
|
|
|
LE
LAC PAVIN : Below Super Besse. This is
a most impressing lake (1000 m diameter, 44 ha,
92 m deep). Set within forests and superb rocks,
this lake is one of the most beautiful ones in the
Auvergne. Its black water enlived by a light glint
is populated with fishes like trouts
and others. You can angle and go boating
in the vulcanic craters.
LE
LAC CHAUVET : The access way passes through
a prairie. The lake is surrounded
by woods and willows. It is the result of a vulcanic
explosion serie producing a caving-in.
EGLISENEUVE
D'ENTRAIGUES : Summer
station at 950 m altitude. La Maison du Fromage
(House of Cheese) welcomes visitors who want to
learn the history and techniques
of the fabrication of Saint Nectaire, Cantal, or
Bleu d'Auvergne cheeses.
CONDAT
EN FENIERS : At
the confluence of the rivers Rhue and Santoire.
Almost all the numerous villas were built by the
natives of this country. They left to make fortune
elsewere by carrying out the profession of « fabric
trader ».
Return to Bort by Champs sur Tarentaine by taking
a charming sinuous route down in the Rhue valley
where, on the way, you can admire for :
- Le Barrage de Coindre built by SNCF (French
National Railway Company)
- Les Cascades du Gabacut
- Le Barrage de Vaussaire by a 13 km forced
conduit, allows conduction of the Rhue's
water into the Bort dam in order to be centrifuged
with the Dordogne water.
CHAMPS
SUR TARENTAINE : If
you have some time left, go up in direction of Marchal
to marvel at the artificial lakes of Lastioule (nautical
basis) and the natural lake of La Crégut. |
