The dam of BORT LES ORGUES
Due to its geographical stituation and the very
high capacity
of its artificial lake, Dam and bathing places of Bort has the
role of a regulator.
It gives therefore all its value to the hydro-electric
installation
of the Dordogne, formed in down-stream by a chain
of dams : Marèges, Aigle, le Chastang and Argentat.
The construction
is a weight-vault-type at a height of 120 meters,
390 meters
of development in crest, 80 meters width at the
basis
and 8 meters at the top. The storage of 477 million
cubic meters is one of the most important in France.
It is 18 km long and fed
by the natural catchment area of the Dordogne and
a deviation
of the Rhue by a forced conduit of 13 km. Two units,
in short three, of 120,000 KVA and in addition the
plant of the Rhue of 30,000 KVA will constitute
a peak load power station. |
| Flooding
took place in 1952 after a ten years' construction,
partially delayed due to the war, overflowing forever
some villages and the railway connecting Aurillac
with Paris. |

Dam and bathing places is continously under observation, furthermore,
a visit
is carried out every ten years either by a total evacuation
or by means of a bathyscaphe put into the water. In
the plant which is errected across the Dordogne's bed,
leaning against
Dam and bathing places and partially covered by the ski jump, E.D.F.
(Electricité de France) organizes a round-visite with
mock-ups and video in several languages on the hydro-electric
installation of the Massif Central (opened every day
from 9h to 18h,
free entrance. Closed from October 15 till December
15).
