The district of SAIGNES in the CANTAL department
SAIGNES
: district capital
of 12 municipalities, at an altitude
of 480 m, with about a thousand inhabitants, is a charming
village around a beautiful place and the church Sainte
Croix built in the XIIth century. Like Bort, Saignes
is located
at the foot of a volcanic stream which forms organs. A
chapel of the XIIth century placed on a basaltic
promontory,
also watches over the village. A multitude of holiday
equipment (swimming pools, tennis courts, archery ...)
ensures a most pleasant stay. Permanence of the Office

YDES
: at an altitude of 400
m, with 2,000 inhabitants. After Aurillac, Ydes is the
second industrial city of the Cantal.
Ydes center is a great commercial and industrial
point (LAPEYRE manufacture). An overall media-centre welcomes
summer visitors and numerous artisans, e.g. the Poterie
de Fleurac. Ydes borough, located some kilometers
away, is a typical village with its superb Sainte Georges
church, jewel of the Auvergnian Roman art, built in
the XIIth century by the Templars who left a Commanderie
vis-à-vis of the church. To be visited also : the Trésor
d'Art Sacré
du Pays de Sumène inside the church and the Museum
of the World's Insects opened
from June 15 until September 15, the castle château
du Châtelet, XVth century (private),
as well as the castle château de Trancis (hotel)
on the way to Saignes.
ANTIGNAC :
(altitude 495 m), touristical place where the river Sumène
flows. It is distinguished by an exceptional unit of three
Roman and Gothic churches or chapels :
-Saint Pierre aux Liens d'Antignac, XIIthe century, recasted
in the XVIIIth century
-the relicts of the Roc Vignonnet chapel, XIIth century
-the Saint Ferréol chapel of Salsignac of the XVthe century.
The cultural center of activities AVENA enables
to combine archaeology, ethnobotanic,
and rural architecture. |

BASSIGNAC
: (altitude
602 m), is dominated by the ruins of château
de Charles, follows
the course of the river Sumène starting from Vendes
where you will find a chapel of the XIth
century and a remarquable priory located
on the old Roman way which was used in the Middle
Ages by the pilgrims of Saint Jacques de Compostelle,
and leads you up to the château
de Bassignac built in the XVIth century, the
church Eglise Sainte Radegonde XIIth century

CHAMPAGNAC
:
a
sunny village at 650 m altitude on a plateau between
Sumène
and Dordogne which was, at the beginning of last
century, the seat of coal-mines where
of remains only an interesting museum now.
A geological exhibition takes place at the Musée
de la Mine with a possibility to have a guided geological
circuit. The ride on the Dordogne passing by the
castle château de Lavandès (hotel) up to
the bridge Pont de Vernéjoux extending over
the storage lake of Aigle is particularly impressing.
Roman church of XIIth century dedicated to
Saint Martin, choir and tower serving as belfry.

LA
MONSELIE
:
(altitude 730 m), the centre is formed by villages
dependant of the manor
of Murat La Rabbe of which the private
castle was saved by the present owners. To by
visited also : the church Saint Jean Baptiste
of the XIXth century, la Croix (the cross)
of the chemin de Lauzeral. Promenades through the
vallée du Violon .

LE MONTEIL
: at
850 m altitude, the borough between Saignes and
Trizac dominates
the valley of Sumène. The picturesque points
are numerous in this village, in particular
the basaltic plateau of Chastel-Marlhac. (church
Saint Victor of XIIth and XVth century).
MADIC
: (altitude
420 m) located between its lake and the storage
lake of Marèges
on the Dordogne, this lovely borough possesses the
ruins of the most important medieval fortress
which defended the passage along the river. (Church
Saint Eutrope of the end XVth century). The
honey production of Ruchers de l'Artense
and the artisanic biscuit production deserves
a visite. |

SAIGNES

SAUVAT
: (altitude
540 m), a medieval borough where the regional gastronomy
is honoured. Very beautiful church Saint Martin
of the XVth century with its rafter heads and sculpted
capitals on the chior. Château de Chavagnac
XVth century (private). A little bit farther away,
on the way to Mauriac, the magnificent château
d'Auzers is worth to be visited (guided visites
from June 15 till September 15).
SAINT
PIERRE
: located on a plateau delimitated by
a loop of the river Dordogne, at an altitude of
700 m, the borough was modified during the exploitation
of an uranium mine (modern church). Anglers reach
the site de Mentier at the storage lake of
Marèges. To be visited also :
Puy de Gioux and the Roches Grandes (orientation
table).
VEBRET
: (altitude
487 m), very beautiful church Eglise Saint Maurice
of XIIth century with
a wooden ceiling and a pyramidal-formed crest bell-tower.
Courtilles is a historically rich village
where the knights Chevaliers de Malte had a chapel,
a paper mill and a Renaissance house. The private
castle château de Couzan with its tower of
the XVth century is also located there. Manoir
de Cheyssac (manor). Gothic cross.
VEYRIERES
: (altitude 680 m). The borough is located
at the foot of Puy du Mas. Sourrounded with forests
it invites for agreeable promenades. Favourite fishing
nook is the access to the Sumène river at the site
de la Veyrie. Roman church Sainte Croix XIIth
